Caleb dropped his head into his hands, his shoulders slumping. “Because I’m ashamed, Mr. Harper. I treated her horribly at the end. When she died… I never got to say I was sorry. I carried that guilt for a year and a half. When I moved back here, I just wanted to go to her grave when no one was around, leave her favorite flowers, and ask for forgiveness. That’s all I did!”
Daniel watched the young man closely. The guilt and grief in Caleb’s eyes were raw and real. But something didn’t add up. “What about the water?” Daniel asked, his voice dropping. “The water bottles? The gallons of water poured over her plot every single night to keep the grass green? What about the plastic sleeve buried in the earth?”
