Spring came. Diane hosted a birthday dinner for Uncle Paul, and Sarah went because not going would have required an explanation she didn’t have. Diane was gracious and funny and held the room the way she always had. Sarah watched her sister laugh and charm and felt upset that she was suspecting someone she still loved.
She made the mistake of mentioning the missing bond to their cousin Danny at dinner. She mentioned it more as something confusing, a thing she was trying to sort out. Danny had kind eyes and a loose mouth, and Sarah had known both things about him since childhood. She should’ve been more careful. She regretted it within forty-eight hours.
