The entire troop remained tightly clustered around Lola, creating an impenetrable living wall inside the main indoor habitat. Primates that had previously maintained a respectful distance from her now stood shoulder to shoulder, vigilant and alert. Every keeper who stepped near the primary access doors was met with immediate, synchronized displays of vocal chest-beating and sharp, defensive grunting.
Gerard stepped toward the secure mesh partition, attempting to evaluate the troop’s behavioral dynamics more closely. Instantly, the dominant silverback shifted his massive frame, placing himself directly between Gerard and the ailing gorilla. The rest of the group reacted in unison, adopting low, guarded postures. Approaching Lola directly within the main enclosure presented an unacceptable safety risk for both humans and animals.
