Behind the thick double curtains separating First Class from the main cabin, the reality of Economy Class had firmly set in for the unannounced guests. When Sarah walked through the aft cabin on her initial water pass at 2:00 AM, the contrast was striking. Julian was wedged tightly into middle seat 42E, his knees pressed directly against the hard plastic seatback in front of him. Beatrice sat rigidly in 42F, staring blankly out the window into the dark sky.
Neither of them was sleeping. There were no motorized legrests, no custom lighting presets, and certainly no complimentary vintage champagne. When Sarah offered them small plastic cups of water, Julian simply gave a tight, mute nod, completely stripped of the grand, name-dropping authority he had projected four hours earlier at JFK.
