I forced his hands behind his back as he fought me, panic spilling out of him in broken bursts. “Please—please—I didn’t take anything!” The cuffs snapped shut, metal biting into his wrists as his strength gave out.
“Why did you run?” I demanded, breath still heavy in my own chest. “Why take off if you’ve got nothing to hide?” He shook his head hard, tears streaking down his face. “I didn’t know—it just—” He stopped, words collapsing in on themselves.
