A crewman suddenly pointed from the boat. “Shark!” Elena followed his finger and saw the dorsal fin. The captain lifted his binoculars. “So that’s why the whales are acting strangely.” Elena stared at the pod. “And maybe that’s why Nathan hasn’t been released.”
The coastguard officer looked at her. “You think the whale is protecting him?” Elena hesitated. “I’m saying we shouldn’t assume it’s trying to kill him.” The shark surfaced again. “If that animal wanted Nathan dead,” she added, “why would it still be carrying him?”
