A rescue vessel was sent from the nearest harbor. “How long?” Elena asked. “They’re moving now,” the captain said. “Until then, we keep following the pod.” He started the engine carefully. Nobody knew whether following the whales would help Nathaniel, but letting them disappear was not an option.
Inside the whale, Nathaniel tried moving one arm. The tongue tightened almost immediately and held him in place. “All right,” he muttered through his regulator. “I’m not going anywhere.” Oddly, the pressure did not feel violent. It felt more like the animal was trying to stop him from moving.
