A whale surfaced fifty meters away with a loud blast of air. “There!” someone yelled. Binoculars swung toward it. Another whale came up nearby, then a third. The pod seemed to be gathering around the reef instead of leaving. “Why are they still here?” Elena asked.
The captain watched the animals closely. “They’re moving together.” One whale surfaced while another disappeared beneath it. Their bodies formed a loose circle. “Are they feeding perhaps?” a crewman asked. The captain frowned. “Maybe. But I’ve never seen them stay this tight around a reef.”
