Deep inside the darkness, Nathaniel felt a low vibration run through his entire body. Then another followed. Whale calls. He had studied those sounds for years through underwater recordings. Now they were passing through his ribs. The calls seemed to come from several animals around him.
A narrow strip of light appeared through the baleen. Nathaniel turned toward it. For a second he saw fish racing through the water and another whale moving past. Then a darker shape flashed behind it, fast and low. Nathaniel could not tell what it was before the light disappeared again.
